BIO
Multi-instrumentalist and producer Nikhil P. Yerawadekar creates propulsive new flavors with his Low Mentality project, delivering personal and uplifting original songs suitable for dancefloors, car stereos and headphones worldwide. The group plays organically cultivated styles drawing from Nikhil’s wide range of experiences, from his formative years as a teenage hip-hop junkie in Queens, NY, to later in his life when he found himself working closely with artists such as Hailu Mergia (Awesome Tapes From Africa), Zap Mama, Tony Allen, Cedric “Im” Brooks and Khaira Arby, and performing all over the world with Antibalas and collaborators such as Santigold, Sharon Jones, Billy Gibbons, Nels Cline and Esperanza Spalding.
The hidden intersections between these broad-ranging musical vibrations are reflected in Low Mentality’s debut album Everything Lasts Forever, released April 2016 on 3rd Generation Recordings, with its lead single “Six Shooter AKA The History Of Dance” (featuring Kendra Morris) reaching over a million plays on Spotify. The band’s music has been featured as Song Of The Day on KEXP and KUT, and continues to be discovered by vinyl lovers and connoisseurs of funky, heartfelt and interesting music across the globe.
Low Mentality features a lineup of strong musical personalities: Mayteana Morales (Pimps Of Joytime, Walk Talk) on percussion and vocals, Carter Yasutake (Midnight Magic, LCD Soundsystem) on trumpet and keys, Jeremy Wilms (Chin Chin) on bass and Andy Bauer (Twin Shadow) on drums. The band’s unique and powerful live show has landed them on bills with artists such as Fishbone, Antibalas, Red Baraat, Noura Mint Seymali, Underground System and Miles Mosley.
Party people come join to have fun. Low Mentality is number one.
PRESS
“Nikhil P. Yerawadekar and Low Mentality make some of the best music coming out of NYC. Not the best Afrobeat, not the best post-highlife, not the best South African psychedelic disco. Some of the best music, period.”
-Saxon Baird, AFROPOP WORLDWIDE
“The band’s funk was crisp and disciplined, informed by American soul but also at home with the rolling six-beat vamps of Ethiopian funk.”
-Jon Pareles, NEW YORK TIMES
"Like the album cover, Nikhil seems to capture the temperature and tempo of New York with a sprawling sound that marries the rhythm and grooves of Antibalas’ afrobeat and infuses it into all sorts of interesting pop and rock motifs. It’d be hard to capture everything going on in this album in a quick capsule review, but rest assured it is literate and fun and funky; familiar and yet utterly unique. Everything Lasts Forever is a hidden gem and highly recommended."
-Aaron Stein, JAMBASE
